Well, my father-in-law is one stubborn beer drinker. He thinks anything but Bud Light is pretty terrible. Well, being a homebrewer I felt like that was a great excuse to challenge myself and decided to come up with a Bud Light clone to see if I could make a beer he would willingly drink. To that end, I took to the Internet to find information on what goes into a Bud Light and how I could recreate one. Unfortunately I had to substitute flaked maze for the flaked rice as my local homebrew store doesn’t carry flaked rice. Oh well, hopefully it turns out close enough!

I started off the brew session a bit later than planned, but overall it went as expected. Just meant I ended up starting the boil after dark… and when you brew in the back yard, it means you have to use a head lamp for a lot of it!

Brew day breakdown

Mashing in I upgraded this year to a mash tun that lets me to very high gravity or do 10 gallon batches. Being a 5 gallon Bud Light clone made the mash seem pretty small.
Hit my mash temp just right! I did manage to hit my mash temperature perfectly though!
First runnings. Starting to collect the wort for the boil
Starting the 60 minute boil Started the 60 minute boil after dark. This was a first for me. The head lamp came in super handy.
Into the fermenter we go Transferring into the fermenter.
Fermentation begins! And into the fermentation chamber.  Perfect lager temperature!

Notes

This is a Bud Light clone recipe.

Made modifications to the recipe due to lack of access to flaked rice. Substituted flaked maze (corn) for flaked rice (1.5lbs flaked maze instead of 2lbs flaked rice).

Sparge started to stick so I stired it to fix. Made the last .25-.5 gallons of runoff cloudy.

Ended up with about .65 less gallons pre-boil than expected. Need to adjust tun deadspace to compensate for future batches.

Pre-boil gravity a bit lower than recipe called for. Consistant issue. Suspect grain crush from Co-Brew.
Note: Adjust grain quantities for lower efficiency on future batches
